The City of Houston and CenterPoint Energy are partnering to develop a regional master energy plan to advance Houston’s transition to sustainable energy.

The initiative dubbed Resilient Now aims to modernize infrastructure to address disruptive weather events, invest in electric vehicle infrastructure, and increase the use of renewable energy sources, according to the city. The 10-year initiative will also include training to bolster the region’s sustainable energy workforce.

“CenterPoint Energy is proud to be collaborating with the City of Houston to develop a regional plan to focus on immediate, medium- and long-term reliability solutions that are specific to the needs of individual communities,” said Dave Lesar, President and Chief Executive Officer of CenterPoint Energy.

The city said it has already improved its water plants and other critical facilities by buying emergency generators, upgrading electrical circuits, and repairing and winterizing the facilities.

The private-public collaboration includes working with Harris County and other regional cities and counties.

In 2021, the Partnership unveiled the Houston Energy Transition Initiative (HETI), a strategic regional blueprint for leading the global energy transition to a low-carbon world. The effort complements a range of existing initiatives, including the city’s Climate Action Plan, launched in 2020.

The city said it plans to complete the master plan by the summer.
