Gov. Greg Abbott delivered his State of the State address before the Texas Legislature on February 5. In his speech, Gov. Abbott outlined a number of emergency items he wants lawmakers to take action on quickly this session. Priorities for the Governor include school finance reform and disaster recovery funding. Read coverage from the Houston Chronicle and KUHF.
“We were encouraged today when Governor Greg Abbott named school finance reform and disaster response as emergency items. The Greater Houston Partnership and Houston’s business community have established these as our top priorities this session,” said Partnership President and CEO Bob Harvey.
“We applaud and thank Governor Abbott for his leadership and vision on these issues and will support our delegation and legislators across the state as they work to address these emergency items.”
On public school finance
“We are encouraged by the groundswell of support that has developed for school finance reform in recent months. A strong public education system is vital for the long-term success of our region and state. Our public education system should provide opportunities for success for all Texas children regardless of their zip code. We are not consistently graduating students who are ready to attend college or enter the workforce.”
On disaster response
“The Partnership is working with communities across the state to secure significant funding for recovery and future flood mitigation needs for the state. The Governor’s announcement adds even more urgency to this issue.”
