Gastech, the world’s largest exhibition and conference for the global gas, LNG and energy industries will return to Houston September 17-19, 2019 at NRG Center.

For over 45 years, the Gastech exhibition and conference has been at the forefront of the international gas, LNG and energy market. This world-renowned event is an extraordinary gathering of the most progressive energy leaders from across the full value chain of the global gas industry. Over 35,000 attendees from all over the world will come to Houston, including 3,500 conference delegates and 1,200 ministerial & c-level executives from across the up, mid and downstream sectors.

We caught up with Nick Ornstein, Vice President of Energy at DMG Events to hear more about this year’s conference and the significance of its return to Houston. DMG events is an international exhibitions and publishing company attracting more than 425,000 visitors to 80 portfolio exhibitions each year.

Why does Gastech feel it’s important to host such a significant event in Houston?

Houston has, for over a century, been at the heart of the North American and global energy community. It’s always been regarded as a pioneering place for entrepreneurs and innovators seeking to push the envelope and develop energy resources more effectively, profitably and intelligently. The US shale industry boomed here first, and the whole city is just perfectly geared towards supporting such a major global energy event of Gastech’s magnitude.

For someone unfamiliar with this global event, can you give an overview of Gastech?

Since its inception in 1972, when the event was launched as a specialist summit for scientists working in LNG technology and transport, Gastech has grown exponentially to become the most important global event for the gas and LNG industries. Today, every major international oil company is present, plus a multitude of national oil companies, global utility companies, engineering contractors, shipping and management, manufacturers and services companies. It continues to grow with every edition and last year in Spain welcomed around 30,000 visitors, more than 2,500 conference delegates, plus 400 VIPs of leadership position across the energy sectors

As the global energy industry continues to evolve and digitize, what are some of the biggest changes you have seen at Gastech over the years?

We have witnessed a sudden surge in the past five years or so towards the incredible integrated opportunities presented by new technologies, especially when we examine automation, artificial intelligence and the ‘internet of things’. The roles that technology now plays in evolving and advancing the energy sectors is no longer peripheral or ‘specialist’ but fully integrated and essential. Technology advances now drive our entire industry forwards from within – improving efficiency, safety, control, speed and human/machine interactions. The next decade could be absolutely revolutionary in defining what our energy landscape will look like as we all move towards a decarbonising, low-emission future.

What are the greatest opportunities for the oil and gas industry right now?

In simple terms – to evolve and lead by example. To utilize all the opportunities presented by technology and integration to maximize their processes across every aspect of the production and supply chain. The industry has a chance to deliver on climate change commitments, to lead from the front, to remain highly-relevant, and to demonstrate just how vital fossil fuels – in clean, efficient and affordable forms – are to the future prosperity of humanity.

What are the greatest challenges?

It takes major global events such as Gastech to help catalyze these urgent issues that are shaping and evolving our industry right now. We now host the event annually to reflect and recognize the rapid pace of change that we are witnessing – hosting every two or three years is no longer relevant and is reactive, and not proactive, to the needs of our community and of our clients.  Our key challenge is to ensure our clients know what they need to know, remain connected with each other, that they communicate and share news and ideas together. Gastech’s challenges are that we must now keep pace with these accelerated changes that are fundamentally impacting our industry most at present.

This is a significant event for those deeply connected to the global oil and gas industry. Why should the average consumer who isn’t in the industry pay attention to Gastech this year?

I think that Gastech is now so large, so interconnected and so global that it has become essential for anyone who is interested in the future energy landscape to attend. What’s so unique about Gastech is how we connect the commercial landscape with the technology and engineering landscape – two distinct groups of professionals who don’t always interact but who gain a huge amount of value from meeting and networking with each other. We represent the entire value chain so appeal to those working in exploration & production, right through the midstream to the customers, end-users and new markets at the other end.  If you want to learn what the future of clean, efficient fossil-fuel energy looks like – be at Gastech.

S&P Global Moves Power Conference to Houston, Highlighting Energy Leadership

10/23/24
In a significant nod to Houston's leadership in the energy transition, S&P Global has moved its annual Financing US Power Conference to Houston after 25 years in New York. The shift is more than just geographical. It is symbolic of Houston's role as a unique collaborative hub for traditional energy and scalable technologies for a low carbon future.   The three-day conference this week is set to attract over 200 attendees, including executives and decision makers from more than 100 companies. These leaders will explore the future of power generation and the essential role finance plays in advancing the energy transition.  “We moved the Financing US Power Conference to Houston to better reflect the city’s growing leadership in energy financing and innovation,” Brian Speight, content program manager at S&P Global, said. “Houston has seen a significant increase in capital flows toward both traditional and renewable energy projects. At the same time, we wanted to engage directly with the energy community here while maintaining strong ties with the financial institutions in New York, ensuring that we’re bridging the conversation between these two critical hubs for energy investment.”  Houston-based energy transition startups, businesses, and companies secured more than $3.88 billion in venture capital and private equity funding in the last five years, with corporate and strategic merger & acquisition investments driving the majority of these deals.  This ability to attract significant capital is further bolstered by Houston’s unique ecosystem. A powerful combination of Fortune 500 energy companies, alongside a thriving network of startups, accelerators, incubators, and world-class education institutions like Rice University and the University of Houston, make Houston a hotbed for energy innovation.  Building on this momentum, the Greater Houston Partnership has led efforts over the last six years to ensure the region remains at the forefront of the energy transition. The launch of the Houston Energy Transition Initative (HETI) has catapulted these efforts, leveraging Houston's industry leadership to accelerate global solutions for an energy-abundant, low-carbon future.  The Financing US Power Conference in Houston will play a pivotal role in advancing conversations that drive progress toward a more sustainable global future.  Learn more about Houston’s Energy Transition Initiative.

Houston’s Industrial Market Experiencing Growth with New Developments and Leases

10/17/24
Houston’s industrial market is experiencing remarkable growth as developers and companies continue to invest in large-scale projects across the region.   According to CBRE’s third-quarter 2024 analysis, Houston experienced a strong net absorption of nearly 6.2 million square feet, bringing the year-to-date total of space leased to 16.3 million square feet, a four percent increase over last year. The report also highlighted a rise in industrial supply, with an additional 3.3 million square feet delivered during the quarter.  Click to expand The southeast submarket was the most active for new developments, with 3.8 million square feet under construction and a 24.6% prelease rate. A key contributor to this growth was Palmer Logistics, which moved into a 616,700-square-foot warehouse facility in Baytown, increasing its distribution space to over three million square feet. The new facility is located within National Property Holdings’ AmeriPort industrial complex.  CBRE also noted that Hinter Lumber Products contributed to the market's growth by securing a 450,000-square-foot lease at Independence Logistics Park in La Porte.  Click to expand Houston’s southwest submarket is also seeing growth. Dallas-based developer Trammell Crow Company (TCC) recently broke ground on Blue Ridge Commerce Center, a 92-acre development in Fort Bend County. This project will add more than 1.35 million square feet of Class A industrial space across five buildings, with completion anticipated by next summer.  “Houston’s southwest submarket is one of the fastest growing industrial submarkets in the region and was less than five percent vacant as of the second quarter of 2024,” said George Farish of TCC in a statement. With a significant tapering of new supply, we expect the market for Class A industrial space to remain healthy heading into 2025 and beyond.”  Meanwhile, Liberty Development Partners acquired more than 1,000 acres along the Grand Parkway, doubling the size of its Gulf Inland Logistics Park in Dayton. This expansion marks the start of phase two of a three-phase development plan, which will ultimately span nearly 4,000 acres. Prologis, a global real estate giant, is also planning to add up to five million square feet of speculative and build-to-suit industrial space at its 350-acre Legacy Point property in Cypress.   Click to expand Houston’s major transportation hubs are also experiencing similar growth. Avera Companies, a Houston-based real estate firm, announced plans for Baywood Logistics, a 401,154-square-foot front-load distribution building near the Houston Ship Channel. Scheduled for completion next year, the 34-acre facility will feature access to container terminals, advanced ingress/egress capabilities and connectivity to major roadways.   Global investment firm Partner Capital has also acquired 153 acres near the George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) for an industrial park development. Although still in the planning stages, the project is expected to break ground by September 2025.  Click to expand In addition to these projects, logistics companies are ramping up their presence in the region. Grainger recently broke ground on a 1.2 million-square-foot distribution center in Hockley, one of its largest facilities to date that will create 400 jobs with an expected open date in 2026. Cresset Real Estate Partners and Lovett Industrial have also secured the largest speculative industrial lease in the Greater Houston area to date with BroadRange Logistics. The company now occupies the 1.2 million-square-foot Northport Logistics Center within the Conroe Park North development.  Despite low vacancy rates last quarter, Houston’s industrial market remains resilient with strong demand and steady growth expected to continue, according to CBRE.  Learn more about Houston’s industrial market.
