Eduardo Aguirre fulfilled his personal commitment to serve the nation on January 20, 2009; retiring as U.S. Ambassador to the Kingdom of Spain, and to the Principality of Andorra. Ambassador Aguirre is Chairman and CEO of Atlantic Partners Group L.L.C.; a consulting group offering strategic, geopolitical, and business advice to clients seeking to maximize their transatlantic business opportunities; additionally, he serves on several corporate boards.

Ambassador Aguirre served during 7 ½ years in three senior-level executive positions in President George W. Bush's Administration. In addition to U.S. Ambassador (2005 - 2009), he served for 2 ½ years, as the first Director of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), an Under Secretary rank position in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. There he led a team of 15,000 employees serving over 6 million annual applicants seeking immigration benefits. Earlier, Aguirre served as the Acting Chairman of the Export-Import Bank of the United States (Ex-Im Bank), a federal agency of the U.S. government. During his tenure at Ex-Im (2001 - 2003), he also served as Vice Chairman and Chief Operating Officer. Each of the three, Senate-confirmed assignments required him to lead and manage markedly different situations, with a focus on being an agent of positive change. He quickly assimilated unfamiliar, dissimilar, and complex issues; as well as, managing and leading teams that responded to diverse motivations.

Prior to his full-time Federal service, Ambassador Aguirre had a 34 year banking career; retiring as President of Bank of America's International Private Bank. His team was consistently acknowledged for excellence in profitability, customer service, regulatory compliance, as well as high employee satisfaction. Ambassador Aguirre has a long record of non-remunerative public and community service. He has served as Chairman of the Board of Regents of the University of Houston System. Former President George H. W. Bush appointed him to the National Commission for Employment Policy. The Supreme Court of Texas appointed him to the State Bar as a non-attorney Director. Additionally, he has served on many other public, professional and civic boards, including Operación Pedro Pan Foundation, among many others. Currently he is on the Boards of Texas Children Hospital, and Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

Ambassador Aguirre has been bestowed the highest civilian decorations by Spain, Andorra, The Holy See, the Royal House of Rwanda, Pakistan, El Salvador, and the Dominican Republic. The Daughters of the American Revolution awarded him their 2004 Americanism Medal. In 2007, The Department of Homeland Security's U.S. Citizen and Immigration Service awarded him "Outstanding American by Choice;" a recognition given to outstanding naturalized citizens. He has been selected to Louisiana State University's Hall of Distinction, and honored with Delta Sigma Pi's Lifetime Achievement Award. Ambassador Aguirre earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Louisiana State University (LSU). He is a graduate of the American Bankers Association's National Commercial Lending Graduate School. He has received honorary doctorate degrees from the University of Connecticut, the University of Houston, and the Universidad Tecnológica de Santiago in the Dominican Republic.

Born in 1946, Ambassador Aguirre and his wife, Maria Teresa "Tere", each emigrated from Cuba as "unaccompanied minors" at the age of 15. They maintain their permanent home in Houston, where they have lived for over three decades. The Aguirres have two adult children, Eddy and Tessie.
